  富马酸的生物合成法具体包括酶催化转化法和微生物发酵法,酶催化转化法一般都是以马来酸为底物,在马来酸异构酶作用下制备富马酸,该方法具有较高的转化效率和产率,如果和天冬氨酸酶联合使用,还可以直接从马来酸制备天冬氨酸,不过,早期由于受技术水平的局限,对微生物的生长代谢了解不够深入,一直未能进行工业化生产。后来,有人利用米根霉具有自我固定的能力,设计了一种旋转生物膜接触器耦联吸附柱的装置,用于米根霉的发酵和富马酸的吸附收集,这个发酵系统通过不断地补料循环,生产出了富马酸。
